Good Morning everybody. I must praise and honor the ancestors in observance of Memorial Day and in loving memory of a fallen BLack King and Afro-Revolutionary, Gil Scott Heron, who has made his transition yesterday, May 27, 2011.
I remember when I first saw Mr. Heron, back in 1997 performing at S.O.B.'s in New York City. He came on stage, went to his keyboard, and before he began his performance he was cracking jokes and expressing his crazy experiences in Europe after he came back from his tour. He began his performance with his band, did only four songs and then announced that he and the band was going to take a ten-minute break. After a few minutes, they announce that Gil Scott Heron has left the building! Everyone was shocked!
I have always respect his early work in the 70's as a singer and a poet. Pieces of a Man was by far a classic album. Although he had a serious drug problem throughout the years, I have always honored and respected this man of consciousness and black talent. He was never afraid to express himself, and we as Artists should never have any fear to express and liberate ourselves. We should not apologize for who we are.
